Day 1: Cusco – Km 104 - Wiñayhuayna - Aguas Calientes
Embark on an extraordinary adventure starting in the early morning. We will pick you up from your hotel between 4 and 4:30 am, and then drive for approximately 2 hours to reach the train station in the town of Ollantaytambo. From there, we will board the touristic train, enjoying a scenic journey of about 1 hour and 20 minutes until we reach Km. 104. Upon arrival, your guide will be waiting to greet you and assist with the registration process at the Inca Trail checkpoint.
The first leg of the hike begins, taking approximately 3 hours to reach Wiñayhuayna, also known as “Forever Young,” situated at an elevation of 2600 m / 8530 ft. Here, you will have the opportunity to explore the fascinating ruins while your guide provides a detailed explanation of their historical significance. Afterward, take some time to savor a packed lunch amidst this remarkable setting.
The hike continues for another 2 hours, leading you to the Inti Punk (Sun Gate). From this vantage point, you can relish in an excellent panoramic view of the majestic citadel of Machu Picchu. Capture some memorable photos and receive a brief introduction from your guide. Then, embark on a 45-minute walk to the citadel itself, where you will have a short period to take in the awe-inspiring beauty of Machu Picchu and capture those iconic photographs.
Following our time at Machu Picchu, we will depart the site and take a 30-minute bus ride down to Aguas Calientes. Once in Aguas Calientes, we will head to the hostel where you can freshen up with a shower, rest, and recharge for the activities planned for the next day. A delicious dinner at a local restaurant is included.
Note: To ensure a smooth early morning pickup, it is recommended to book a hotel in the historical city center of Cusco. Most AirBnBs might not have easily identifiable names or addresses and may be located far from the city center. Alternatively, we can arrange a specific meeting point for your convenience.
Day 2: Aguas Calientes - Machu Picchu - Aguas Calientes - Cusco
On the second day, we will commence our ascent to Machu Picchu early in the morning at 4:30 am, aiming to witness the breathtaking sunrise from the Inca city. This moderate hike will take approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes. Alternatively, you have the option to take a bus (not included, $12 each way) to reach Machu Picchu. If you choose the bus, it is essential to take the first one to arrive at Machu Picchu by 6 am.
Once we arrive at Machu Picchu, your guide will lead you on a comprehensive tour lasting about 2 hours (note that the guided tour is conducted for the entire group). During this enlightening experience, you will explore key sites such as the Intihuatana, The Sacred Plaza, The Temple of the Sun, and The Temple of the Condor, while gaining a deeper understanding of the historical significance behind this hidden architectural marvel. After the guided tour, you will have a couple of hours to further explore Machu Picchu at your own pace, immersing yourself in the unique ambiance of the Inca citadel.
If you managed to secure tickets to ascend either Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain, you will have the opportunity to embark on a challenging hike up one of these peaks (please note that availability is limited by the government and the Ministry of Culture). Scaling Huayna Picchu takes approximately 2 hours, while Machu Picchu Mountain requires around 3 hours. The duration of our stay at the citadel will vary depending on whether or not you decide to undertake one of these mountain climbs.
After concluding our time at Machu Picchu, we will return to Aguas Calientes, where you can enjoy lunch at a venue of your choice before we commence our journey back. We will board the train to Ollantaytambo, with a travel time of approximately 2 hours. From there, we will proceed by car to Cusco, which will take around 2 hours, arriving in the evening.
