Cusco - Abra Malaga - Santa María
We kick off this extraordinary adventure by picking you up from your hotel between 7 and 7:30 am. Our journey begins as we head towards the Sacred Valley of the Incas, offering breathtaking views of the majestic Vilcabamba and Vilcanota mountains, along with panoramic vistas of the Sacred Valley itself.
After approximately 2 hours, we make a brief stop in the town of Ollantaytambo, allowing you to stretch your legs and use the restroom. Continuing our drive for another hour, we reach the Abra Malaga pass, situated at an impressive altitude of 4,316m/14,160 ft. This is where our exhilarating downhill bike ride commences, lasting approximately 3 hours. As we descend, you’ll be treated to a stunning landscape adorned with diverse flora and fauna.
Arriving in the town of Huamanmarca, we’ll enjoy a satisfying lunch and take the opportunity to explore some small Inca ruins. Our journey then continues as we make our way to Santa María, where you’ll have the chance to engage in an exciting rafting experience during the afternoon. Please note that rafting is not recommended during the rainy season for safety reasons. Alternatively, you can choose to relax in the family lodging, freshen up with a shower, and take in the tranquil surroundings. In the evening, we’ll gather at a local restaurant for a delightful dinner.
Important note: To ensure a smooth early morning pickup, we recommend booking a hotel in the historical city center. Most AirBnBs lack easily identifiable names or addresses and are often located far away from the city center. Alternatively, we can arrange a specific meeting point for your convenience.
Santa María - Santa Teresa
The day begins with a satisfying breakfast at a restaurant, bright and early at 06:00 am. Get ready for a truly remarkable day ahead! Our adventure kicks off with a scenic hike along the picturesque Urubamba River for approximately 45 minutes. From there, we will join the original Inca Trail that once connected Machu Picchu to Vilcabamba, embarking on a captivating 3-hour walk.
During this trek, keep an eye out for the diverse wildlife that inhabits the region, including birds such as parrots, hummingbirds, and eagles, as well as mountain cats, centipedes, and lizards. Along the way, you’ll also encounter various medicinal plants and witness vast plantations of bananas, mangoes, oranges, cacao, coca, coffee, and more. Our journey leads us to the charming town of Quellomayo, where we’ll take a well-deserved break and enjoy a delicious lunch.
Afterwards, we’ll continue our hike for approximately 3 and a half hours until we reach the Santa Teresa hot springs, also known as Cocalmayo. These natural hot springs, set amidst the open air, provide the perfect opportunity to unwind and relax your muscles after a long day of walking. Take a rejuvenating bath and soak in the soothing warmth.
As the day draws to a close, we’ll make our way to the town of Santa Teresa, where we’ll spend the night in a cozy family lodging. In the evening, we’ll indulge in a delightful dinner at a local restaurant, savoring the flavors of the region.
Note: For your convenience, please ensure you have booked a hotel in the historical city center for the early morning pickup. Many AirBnBs in the area lack identifiable names or addresses and are often situated far from the city center. Alternatively, we can arrange a specific meeting point to ensure a smooth start to our adventure.
Santa Teresa – Hidroeléctrica – Aguas Calientes
Once we’ve enjoyed a delightful breakfast in Santa Teresa, our next adventure awaits. We’ll make our way to the base of the Zipline, where our expert guide will equip us with all the necessary safety gear. Get ready for an exhilarating experience that will last approximately 2 hours. With 6 different ziplines of varying lengths and an incredibly long hanging bridge amidst the jungle, you’re in for a thrilling ride.
Afterwards, we’ll hop on a transport and head towards the Hidroeléctrica, where a delicious lunch awaits us. Energized and satisfied, we’ll embark on a scenic walk alongside the beautiful Vilcanota River, which will lead us to the charming town of Aguas Calientes. The trek will take approximately 3 hours, offering picturesque views along the way.
Upon our arrival in Aguas Calientes, we’ll check into our cozy hostel and gather for our final group meal, savoring the last flavors of this incredible journey together. It’s the perfect time to reflect on the memories we’ve made and appreciate the natural beauty that surrounds us.
Aguas Calientes - Machu Picchu - Cusco
Our day begins with an early morning ascent to Machu Picchu, allowing us to witness the breathtaking sunrise from this magnificent Inca city. The moderate hike will take approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes, offering stunning views along the way. Alternatively, you have the option to take the bus (not included) for $12 each way, ensuring arrival at Machu Picchu by 6 am.
Once we arrive at Machu Picchu, our knowledgeable guide will provide a comprehensive tour lasting approximately 2 hours. Together, we will explore the main sites, including Intihuatana, The Sacred Plaza, The Temple of the Sun, and The Temple of the Condor. You will gain insights into the rich history and marvel at the architectural wonders of this hidden gem. After the guided tour, you will have a couple of hours to freely explore Machu Picchu at your own pace, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the unique atmosphere of this Inca citadel.
For those who have obtained entry to Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain, an exciting opportunity awaits to conquer one of these mountains. Please note that availability is limited and regulated by the government and the Ministry of Culture. Climbing Huayna Picchu takes approximately 2 hours, while Machu Picchu Mountain requires approximately 3 hours. Your choice to climb one of these mountains will significantly impact the time spent at Machu Picchu.
When it’s time to return to Cusco, you have two options to consider:
- Train Option: This option allows for more time to visit Machu Picchu and climb one of the mountains, requiring a minimum of 3 hours. After spending approximately 7 or 8 hours at Machu Picchu, you will need to return to Aguas Calientes to catch the 18:20 train to Ollantaytambo, a 2-hour journey. From Ollantaytambo, a 2-hour car ride will take you back to Cusco, with an estimated arrival time of around 10:30 pm. If you have a specific train time preference, feel free to contact us.
- Car Option: Under this option, you will arrive at Machu Picchu around 6:00 am and enjoy a 2-hour guided tour, followed by some free time for independent exploration. If you plan to climb Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain and wish to return by car, please note that time will be limited. To catch the 2:30 pm car back to Cusco, you would need to leave Machu Picchu by 11:30 am and embark on a 3-hour walk back to Hidroeléctrica. The car journey to Cusco would then take approximately 6 hours. We highly recommend considering an additional night’s stay in Aguas Calientes and returning to Cusco by car the following day for a more relaxed experience.
We are here to assist you throughout this incredible journey, so please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any specific train time or travel arrangement preferences.
