Cusco – Ollantaytambo - Aguas Calientes
The tour kicks off with a hotel pickup in Cusco around 10:00 AM. We’ll then embark on a scenic 2-hour drive to the Ollantaytambo train station. Along the way, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of the Sacred Valley of the Incas, an important stronghold that historically safeguarded against jungle incursions by the Antis tribe. Today, it thrives as an agricultural region, supplying Cusco with an abundance of corn, fruits, and vegetables.
Upon arrival at the train station, we’ll board the 13:00 train bound for Aguas Calientes. This enchanting journey spans approximately 2 hours, offering a mesmerizing route through the Sacred Valley and gradually descending into the lush high jungle, where the mighty Andes converge with the vast Amazon. Once we reach Aguas Calientes, a friendly guide will be waiting to accompany you to your hostel, where you’ll spend the night. With the rest of the afternoon and evening at your disposal, you can freely explore Aguas Calientes or indulge in a visit to the nearby thermal springs, just a 15-minute walk from town (entrance fee of 10 soles).
Please note that for the pickup, it is recommended to book a hotel in Cusco’s historical city center due to the ease of location finding. Most AirBnBs lack proper addresses or are situated far from the city center. Alternatively, we can arrange a specific meeting point for your convenience.
Aguas Calientes - Machu Picchu - Aguas Calientes - Cusco
We will commence our hike to Machu Picchu bright and early in the morning, around 4:30 am, to witness the breathtaking sunrise at the Inca city. The moderate hike takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes. Alternatively, you have the option to take a bus (not included, $12 each way), but please note that the first bus must be taken to arrive at Machu Picchu by 6 am. Upon arrival, our guide will lead a comprehensive tour lasting around 2 hours, during which you’ll have the chance to explore significant sites such as Intihuatana, The Sacred Plaza, The Temple of the Sun, and The Temple of the Condor. Gain deeper insights into the history of this hidden architectural marvel.
After the guided tour, you’ll have a couple of additional hours to independently explore Machu Picchu at your own pace, soaking in the unique atmosphere of the Inca citadel. If you have secured tickets for Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain, you’ll have the opportunity to ascend one of these peaks (availability limited by the government and the Ministry of Culture). Climbing Huayna Picchu typically takes 2 hours, while Machu Picchu Mountain requires approximately 3 hours. The duration of your stay at Machu Picchu largely depends on whether or not you choose to undertake these mountain hikes.
Once we conclude our time at the citadel, we will return to Aguas Calientes. You can enjoy lunch at a place of your preference before embarking on the return journey. We will take the 16:22 train (subject to availability) back to Ollantaytambo, allowing you to relish the beautiful scenery once again. Upon arrival in Ollantaytambo, our private transportation will be ready to transport you back to Cusco. Please ensure your name is on their list for added security. If you have a specific train time preference, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
**For those interested in purchasing tickets for entry to Huayna Picchu, we recommend selecting the first group (07:00 AM – 08:00 AM).
